Professional Occupations For Which Graduates Are Prepared In The Program

Clinical laboratory science professionals (also called medical laboratory scientists or medical laboratory technicians) are highly skilled scientists who discover the presence or absence of disease and provide data that helps physicians determine the best treatment for the patient.

Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) (Clinical laboratory professionals) can work in:

  • Commercial or reference laboratories
  • Public health laboratories
  • Pharmaceutical or chemical industries
  • Biotechnology companies
  • Forensic and law enforcement laboratories
  • Veterinary clinics
  • Research Pursue career as a research assistant.
  • Teaching institutions Join colleges/universities as laboratory assistants.
  • Transplant and blood donor centers
  • Fertility clinics
  • The cosmetic or food industry
  • Work as application specialists in biomedical instrument companies.

Program Goals

    1. Understand the components of the diagnostic process and perform diagnostic laboratory analysis in accordance with the established laboratory procedures and professional standards of practice without error of clinical significance.
    2. Maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with laboratory procedures to the extent that laboratory safety and test results without error of clinical significance are assured.
    3. Demonstrate professionalism reflective of the standards of practice and code of ethics which underlie the profession.
    4. Demonstrate essential knowledge in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, immunology, and biostatistics
    5. Perform and interpret results of clinical laboratory tests including: blood bank, urinalysis and other body fluids, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology.
    6. Demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professionals and the public.
