Mission of Programm

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is to provide students with core competencies, knowledge and skills needed to develop highly competent professionals, prepared for entry-level positions in civil engineering, further graduate study, life-long learning, and societal leadership.

Professional Occupations For Which Graduates Are Prepared In The Program

Graduates of the civil engineering program are prepared for a variety of careers in Civil Engineering. Example job titles include:

  • Design Engineer: define proper work methods and processes and ways to measure the performance of these processes.

  • Construction Engineer: utilizing all resources efficiently and effectively with cost for the construction of civil engineering buildings/facilities

  • Civil Municipality Engineer: Oversee the functions of facilities in local municipalities.

  • Project manager: manage projects by mapping out who does what, when, and how it can be done more efficiently. Form and direct teams to work toward a specific task and objectives.

Goals and PLOs for General Education

a. Goals

  1. Provide students with the knowledge needed to pursue their major.
  2. Expand student’s understanding of self, environment, and society.
  3. Enable students to build a base of knowledge and skills that are needed for lifelong learning.
  4. Give students the knowledge, skills, and motivations to make an ethical decision based on an understanding of the societal values

b. GE PLOS

CVE general education prepares the student to:

  1. Communicate effectively, in oral, written or listening situations and daily settings in Arabic or English.
  2. Develop technological literacy and use the application of technology to achieve personal and educational goals.
  3. Apply mathematical and statistical concepts to solve quantitative real-life problems.
  4. Understand and apply scientific methods.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic theories and concepts in social and behavioural sciences; and apply them to personal, social, and developmental issues.
  6. Understand the major ethical concepts and theories in the professional fields.
  7. Adopt effective learning strategies appropriate to the situation.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of current environmental challenges.
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of the Islamic religion and its relation to culture, civilization, and science.
  10. Use critical thinking and reasoning skills for problem-solving.

Goals and PLOs for Engineering Core and the Civil Engineering Major

a. Goals

  1. Instil within the students the motivation and desire to follow sound moral judgment in personal and professional roles.
  2. Strengthen the engineering judgment of graduates by providing a capability for critical thinking, creative problem solving, and innovative decision-making processes in an organizational setting.
  3. Improve the students’ abilities to utilize engineering science techniques to resolve complex engineering problems
  4. Strengthen the students’ abilities and skills to work effectively in teams.
  5. Equip the students with the knowledge to guide their organization during periods of change.
  6. Prepare the graduates to assume leadership positions in organizations, locally and in multicultural organizations.
  7. Promote graduates awareness of concepts, tools and methodologies relevant to the field of civil engineering.
  8. Equip students with multidisciplinary competencies in the field of civil engineering
  9. Prepare students to identify, analyze, formulate and solve problems related to civil engineering projects
  10. Prepare students to serve in middle management civil engineering positions in private and public organizations

b. CVE PLOs

Upon graduation, a CVE graduate in civil engineering should demonstrate:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering;
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments as well as analyze and interpret data;
  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability;
  4. an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams;
  5. an ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems;
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
  7. an ability to communicate effectively;
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context;
  9. a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
  10. knowledge of contemporary issues;
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
