On Thursday, February 9th, 2017 The Emirates College of Technology announced the new services offered by the newly established Education and Technology Department (ETSD). The Chief Education & Technology servicesOfficer, Dr. Ahmed Dabbagh and his team held a meeting with all the faculty members to announce these services that will be accessible soonto faculty, students and staff at the college on its three campuses.
Dr. Ahmed Dabbagh, the Chief Education & Technology services Officerhas introduced the new department members and their new roles. He has focused on the new changes that are mandated by the new strategic plan of the college. New approaches of teaching and learning that integrate up- to- date technologies are some of the main areas of focus in the next era of the college strategic plan. Consequently, IT department and education technologies units have been merged in the new department of ETSD to complete each other to provide added-value and distinguished services. Dr. Ahmed displayed the services that will be provided by the department as: “educational technology services, students’ services, staff and admin services, website, Learning Management System (LMS), operational and external services.
After displaying the statistics that have been done by the department about the current situation, Dr. Ahmed talked about the next plan of the new department and the services that aim at improving the college environment. He has given a chance to the instructional designer to talk about the interrelationship between teaching, learning and educational technologies and the essential role that technology has played in the current educational practices. Then Dr. Ahmed, expressed his hope that the statistics of the use of educational technologies and the LMS will be changed after launching the new “Look and Feel” interface of the college LMS. He gave a brief idea about the new changes that have taken place in the LMS, Internet and computers that are likely to improve the current situation.
Faculty members have also been given the chance to discuss how the services will be implemented, the obstacles or constraints that are likely to arise and how to tackle them. They have also discussed their expectations and recommendations for the new department.
At the end of the meeting, Dr. Ahmed talked about the faculty capacity building and the different levels that will be provided to the faculty members by ETSD. The training on using educational technologies will have three levels; level 1, which will be mandatory, level 2 and level 3 that will focus on the incorporation of technology in teaching, learning and assessment.
The meeting has rounded off with some group and individual discussions about the topics of the meeting. Dr. Ahmed has promised periodical meetings with faculty members to evaluate the services and the training.
